(9 December 2011) Coffey International Limited (“Coffey”) has received two Gold Awards at the Consult Australia Awards for Excellence which were announced last Friday at the annual awards dinner held in Sydney.

The Consult Australia Awards recognise outstanding achievement by Consult Australia Member Firms demonstrating technical excellence and superior design skills.

Coffey Managing Director, John Douglas, said that this year’s double gold was an outstanding achievement by the Coffey Geotechnics and Coffey International Development team.

“Being awarded two Gold Awards by the industry is extremely satisfying, as Australia has a large number of quality engineering firms delivering good projects. This recognition shows the depth of talent in Coffey’s teams,” he said.

Coffey Geotechnics along with SMEC Australia and AECOM received a Gold Award in the Transport and Civil Infrastructure category for their work on the Gateway Upgrade Project for the Leighton Abigroup Joint Venture.

Brisbane’s A$2.12 billion Gateway Upgrade Project included development of a new bridge, recently renamed the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge – South. Coffey Geotechnics provided full geotechnical design and construction services for the project which included bridge foundation design for over 30 other bridges, fill embankment design, ground treatments, pavements and construction advice. Coffey Environments and Coffey Projects were also involved in the upgrade. Despite its scale and complexity, the project was delivered on budget and 7 months ahead of time. It was also awarded the nation’s best infrastructure project by Infrastructure Partnerships Australia this year.

Mr Douglas said, “The Gateway is one of the most important recent road projects in Australia and a fairly complex job with our geosciences specialists instrumental in its delivery”.

Coffey International Development received a Gold Award in the Aid Project category for their work on the Basic Education Development Program (BEDP) which was funded by AusAID.

BEDP was designed as a 10 year program to support capacity building and school infrastructure development at province and school community levels. It is a cooperative initiative of the Papua New Guinea and Australian Governments. The project's purpose is to establish an ongoing program of primary and community school facility development and maintenance, which is being independently managed by school communities with assistance from local level government, NGOs, relevant Provincial Division of Education offices, and supported by appropriate Government of PNG departments. It is a major and important part of AusAID's program of assistance to the PNG education sector.

Mr Douglas said: “The judges noted the strong community involvement, particularly of women. The outcomes were highly regarded by local communities as well as the provincial and national governments - an achievement we are very proud of”.
